The first place I wore this necklace was, of course, somewhere I thought there would be awkward silence. Some of the nuts are then dyed and crafted into jewelry pieces like this by artist Veronica Martens, whose Etsy Shop you can find here. Tagua nuts are a renewable resource whose harvesting provides over 35,000 jobs in Ecuador alone. The back story goes like this: the necklace, and the matching earrings, are made out of Tagua nuts, the seeds of a Palm Tree found in the South American rainforests.

That being said, when I saw this necklace during my trip to Memphis, I had to have it, especially because it had such an interesting back-story that I knew would aid any conversation about it.

Take my word for it, a statement necklace will be a talker when no one else wants to. The reason why? Because it’s something that’s so big and and so close to your face, that it’s nearly impossible not to notice, making it an almost 100% guarantee that someone will point it out. Statement earrings can also work, but I try to stick to a necklace. From that moment on, I have worn a statement necklace to any event I thought might have awkward silence at some point. Then other people joined in, the conversation developed, and then even more people joined and before I knew it, the awkward silence was long dead, all because of a necklace. The necklace I was wearing at the time was a big, pearl and crystal necklace, and the compliment spurred a whole conversation about it. A few months ago I was at a dinner party, in awkward silence, and counting the seconds until someone mentioned the weather, which never ended up happening: my counting was cut short (thank god) by a compliment on my necklace. I was fortunate enough to have the answer of a go-to conversation come to me. Naturally, I started to search for things that could be my go-to conversation topics in these times of desperation. (We get it already, Ohio can’t make up its mind). If you’re lucky, someone may mention the weather, but that exchange always gets real tired real quick. It’s always the same routine: everyone standing in close proximity while painstakingly trying to not make eye contact, maybe over-obsessively checking their phone or taking 300 small sips of their drink… eek. It makes me uncomfortable just thinking about it. How many times have you been in a social situation that had nothing but awkward silence? If you’re like me, then probably a lot of times.
